Abstract
|
|
|
Because of the many types of retroperitoneal timors and their rarity, information concerning the
diagnosus, and treatment of a large series of these is of importance. The retroperitoneum is a large
area extending from the thoracic to the pelvic diaphragm between the iliac crests and the tips of
the twelfth ribs laterally. In this large area a great variety of tissues possess the potential for unr
estricted growth and tumor formation.
The present report is clinical analysis of 32 cases of retroperitoneal tumor from the Severance
Hospital past 10 year and 7 month of duration, from January, 1960 through JUly, 1970. We have
been able to summarize as follows from this study:
1) The age incidence of retroperitoneal tumor revealed prevalence under the age of 10 and bey
ond the age of 40, with a ratio of 2.2 males to 1 female.
2) The chief complaints in order of frequency were gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal
pain, nausea, and constipation in 71.8%, systemic manifestations such as weight loss, fever & chills,
and anorexia in 51.2%, and genitourinary symptoms in 12.5%.
3) The positive physical findings were palpable abdominal mass in 78.3% and abdominal tender
ness in 29.2%.
4) The exact histological diagnosis is almost impossible unless laparotomy with biopsy is perfo
rmed. But the clinical diagnosis is made by analyzing the clinical symptoms, positive physical find
ing, and X-ray examinations such as I.V.P., retrograde pyelography,, aortogram, venogram, upper
G-I series, small bowel series and barium enema, and so on.
5) The histological diagnosis of this series in order of frequency were lipsarcoma, malignant
lymphoma, and neuroblastoma.
6) The treatment of retroperitoneal tumor is radical excision. Even in cast of palliative resectfom
irradiational therapy or chemotherapy is certainly worthwhile to try.
7) More than 70% of the tumors are malignant and less than 25% of the tumors are benign.
